As summer break began, excitement buzzed in the air during our last club night at Abergavenny Camera Club. This year, we set off on a picturesque walk around the Talybont Waterfalls, a destination known for its stunning views and perfect photo opportunities. Talybont is not just a reservoir; it’s a breathtaking landscape crafted by nature, inviting us to capture its beauty through our lenses.
Located in the heart of the Brecon Beacons, Talybont features the largest man-made reservoir in the area. The enchanting waterfalls and rushing rapids we explored exist due to a geological feature called a hanging valley. Water streams cascade down rocky inclines, creating spectacular falls and powerful rapids. The experience is unique, as these streams flow down what was once the valley of a tributary glacier, allowing us to see nature’s beauty at its most dramatic.
Eight enthusiastic camera club members gathered for this evening adventure, eager to capture the natural world’s allure. Despite the warm and slightly humid weather, the atmosphere felt adventurous and inviting. After meeting up, we crossed a bridge and followed a well-worn path that ran alongside the flowing river.
The Beauty of Talybont's Waterfalls
Surprisingly, despite a few dry months leading up to our outing, the water flow was strong and vibrant, creating magnificent waterfalls and calm pools. Each twist and turn of the trail revealed fresh photographic prospects. Supportive of one another, we took the time to set up our individual shots, losing track of time as we immersed ourselves in the art of photography.
According to statistics, Talybont Waterfalls attract thousands of visitors each year, and our evening proved why. The stunning views and natural sounds of rushing water and singing birds created a serene environment.
However, not everything went smoothly! The notorious midges turned our peaceful outing into a tenacious battle. The more experienced members came prepared, donning jackets with hoods to fend off the buzzing insects. It was a good reminder to pack extra protection for future expeditions.

Capturing the Moment
While we only scratched the surface of Talybonts breathtaking offerings, my personal goal for the walk was to capture the enchanting waterfalls with a dreamy slow shutter speed. Unfortunately, I didn't have a neutral density filter, making it a challenge. Instead, I switched to Program mode on my camera and tried various settings to achieve a similar effect.
As we continued our adventure, I found myself inspired by the beauty all around me. From glistening water tumbling over rocks to tranquil pools reflecting the trees, I felt incredibly lucky to be there. Even though we faced midges and technical challenges, I came away with some decent shots that conveyed the spirit of the evening.
As a group of passionate photographers, our shared bond made the evening even more enjoyable. Everyone brought a unique style and perspective, creating a lively environment filled with tips and tricks. This collaboration turned a simple nature walk into a memorable photographic journey.

Embracing Nature and Photography
Wrapping up our evening, I felt grateful for the moments we shared, the beauty of nature, and our growing photography community. Visiting the Talybont Waterfalls wasn't just about photography; it was a refreshing reminder of the incredible experiences awaiting us outdoors—no matter how small, like each waterfall we visited.
The connections forged during our outing were as valuable as the photographs we captured. Talybont is a must-visit for anyone who loves photography or simply appreciates nature. The accessible route offers a rewarding walk paired with remarkable photo opportunities.
As summer progresses and days get longer, adventure awaits. For photographers, the golden hours of evening light cast a magical glow. Talybont Waterfalls stand as a beacon to embrace the natural wonders around us and seize every chance to create beautiful memories.
Cherishing the Experience
Our evening at Talybont was a perfect farewell to the club until our next season begins. It was more than a chance to enhance our photography skills; it was a treasured experience shared with friends. I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to Talybont to explore and photograph its stunning waterfalls.
So, what do you think? Did I capture the spirit of Talybont in my photography? Whether you are a seasoned photographer or just someone who enjoys nature, I hope this blog inspires you to seek your adventures, to chase waterfalls, and create lasting memories.
